The word “therukoothu” means ‘street play’ in Tamil. Therukoothu is a form of folk theatre that has been practiced in Tamil Nadu for centuries. It is performed by a group of actors and musicians who travel from town to town and perform for an audience on streets and public places. Therukoothu draws its repertoire from our rich literary traditions and focuses on social issues, values, and everyday life.

Therukoothu is an important form of expression in the state's cultural milieu today.
